Action Learning
Action learning involves small groups of social entrepreneurs coming together to share experiences and learn from one another in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. The sessions are focused on the real-life issues and challenges that participants bring to the group, enabling participants to develop action plans, informed and inspired by the group as a whole.
Typically, an action learning set (ALS) consists of 4-6 people who commit to meet on a regular basis to support each other in their work. The ALS is facilitated by a trained facilitator whose role is to ensure the group stays focused. ALSs are a very powerful way of harnessing the strengths and qualities of a group to support each other in finding solutions to the issues they face setting up or developing their social enterprise.
There are different types of ALSs. Some comprise people from the same profession or sector (e.g. health, education), some are made up of people employed at a similar level within their different organisations (e.g. senior managers, development officers), while others are based in the same geographical area. Each ALS meeting usually lasts around 3 hours. Most sets commit to meet between 4-6 times a year.
